Summer songs
Summer.. you’ve got to love summer. Especially in a country where winters (and every other season) are cold, wet and windy, there is something truly magical about those first days of spring (you know what I am talking about) and the next few months that follow.
In fact, for some reason different seasons feature quite commonly in my lyrics, just think of The Tale of Mary, Heart’s on Fire or Queen in the Head (those who know it), to name a few. But summer songs are something special. They take you back to long days of seemingly eternal sunshine when you almost forgot what it feels like not wearing your winter coat when going down to the corner shop. You’ve got to love summer songs.
There is a time and place though, right? Marketing (and common sense) suggests you should release an album with summer songs by the beginning of summer, but that also means you have to write them in winter coat, which invariably suggests all you can write is about the longing and not actual experiences (since you can’t even remember last summer as per the above example). Hmm not the worst place to start though, I suppose.
I have written a few summer songs before, but they were just scattered across my albums, (although I have got to admit Soak up the Sun is in my opinion one of my best ones so far - shame my audience seem to disagree!) and I have been entertaining the idea of putting together a summer album for a long time, but the fact that writing and producing 10+ songs about a single topic has put me off.
Ok, so what about an EP? Now we’re talking.
I think it was February when I first looked at my voice memos with the the desire to harvest them for the sake of a release, and to be fair it only took a few minutes to pick out 4 that I thought could fit well in the concept, and I already had a fifth one recorded as a demo! For the other four I have been gathering ideas in the past week or so, just looking to find that spare few hours in a day when I could sit down and start laying the first tracks down.
Today is the 1st of April, and I think one of those days have come. Will I be able to put it all together before summer kicks off? We shall find out soon!
