Behind the Record: Unplugged (2024)

 


Concept


"With a very few exceptions, I have always written my songs on an acoustic guitar, and in my teenage years I was more often than not accompanied by one too wherever I went. Being a fan of my favourite artists' unplugged albums, I was also very curious to hear how my songs would sound in acoustic orchestration.


In terms of sound and atmosphere, I was aiming to achieve something similar to Jamie Winchester & Hrutka Robert's "Wood and Strings" album, while keeping the orchestration relatively simple with two acoustic guitars, bass, drums, piano, and strings or brass, where appropriate."


The album was recorded between October 2023 and early June 2024, with mixing and mastering done in June and July. There were a total of 26 songs recorded for purposes of the release, however only 16 made it to the final record, with many of the excluded songs only featuring demo vocals.


Of the final tracklist, there are 3 previously unreleased songs ("Out of Will", "Keep Your Faith in Me" and "Twenty-Two Days"), all of which were originally written between 2008 and 2009, and one ("Tomorrow I'll Find") that features the original demo version of the song. 


The album debuted on 30th August 2024, with a live performance at No Milk Today in Szeged, Hungary, with an extended tracklist of 20 songs, featuring fellow musicians Peter Erdei (guitar, percussion), Gerda Nagy (piano) and Peter Sandor (bass), while drums, strings and brass were played from backing tracks.


The album artwork features images taken at a previous acoustic concert at the same venue in 2022, where the lineup not yet included Gerda Nagy on piano. 2020.. a swear word now, isn’t it? Like many of us, I found myself locked among four walls, not really allowed to go out and amazed how many hours there are in a day! Although I have been producing and releasing singles for over 10 years by then, often years would pass between releases, and even those would only be published on MySpace (good old days!), YouTube or Soundcloud so it was about time to turn it up a notch! Gear: Epiphone Classic Les Paul Special II

After I sat down with myself and agreed “NO MORE GUITARS!” Yes, I was asking for trouble. There is this app called Nextdoor, where you can keep up to date with what’s happening in your neighbourhood (stray cat, dumped rubbish and nail technicians - Wembley top 3), but also buy/sell stuff. I have been looking for bargain buys, but really bargain ones only. This 2006 guitar was advertised for £90 by a chap who bought it to learn how to play, but after a few weeks of self-teaching gave up and went on to play piano instead, consequently it had barely been used. Although I am aware this model has been produced in vast quantities (it’s likely still in production) and is an entry level guitar, it really is more than convincing with solid, round lows and mids, and is quite a versatile instrument and a nice addition to any home studio on my level. Just a couple of years ago, my friend, Peter has already embarked on his mission of creating instruments, and his projects have since been some of our most talked about topics. You will find out why soon, but believe me when I say do check him out ,  I have a very good reason to say so. His informal mission statement was “affordable guitars, made for you.” The idea behind it all was the fact that although many musicians have a good idea of what they would like their dream guitar or bass to look, feel and sound like, they are restricted by their budgets and simply can’t afford buying them even from the second hand market.
